Biography

Matthew Thompson completed clinical training as a Family Physician in the USA and the UK, and research training at the University of Washington and a doctorate from the University of Oxford. His research has focused in several areas - diagnostic testing, digital health, child health, infectious disease, new technology, and global health. His research has involved many different types of research designs including diagnostic accuracy, large cohort studies, qualitative studies, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews.
He has a particular interest in using new technology to improve diagnosis and monitoring for acute and chronic conditions in primary care, and directs the Primary Care Innovation Lab. This includes studies of identifying symptom signatures for detection of cancer from electronic medical records using AI/ML and NLP, app-supported home/self tests for infections, developing predictive algorithms using digital health and patient-centered data, regulatory science around novel diagnostics, smartphone based decision support for community health workers, measurement of BP and other vital signs at home or with wearable devices. He has published over 230 articles in peer reviewed journals and written an additional >50 book chapters/reports/commentaries.

From 2023-2022 he was Vice Chair for Research in the Department, and was the inaugural holder of the Helen D. Cohen endowed Professorship.
